Everything you need to know before you ride.
York, Maine is one of the best places on the New England coast to explore by bike. You've got flat coastal roads, quiet backroads through the woods, a bona fide mountain (Mount Agamenticus), and miles of ocean views — all within a short ride of our shop at 241 York Street.
Whether you're visiting for the weekend or a local who's never gotten around to renting a bike, here's what you need to know about bike rentals in York, Maine — straight from the team at Bike & Paddle.
Bike & Paddle is York's local bike shop and rental spot. We're located at 241 York Street, York, Maine 03909 — easy to find, easy to park, and right in the middle of everything. We rent Trek bikes, which means you're getting actual quality equipment, not tired old rental bikes.
Rental rates are simple: $25 for a half day (up to 4 hours) and $40 for a full day. Helmet included. Call us at 207-363-4070 to reserve or just walk in — we're open Wed–Fri 9AM–5PM and Saturday 9AM–3PM.
Here are the routes our staff actually rides — and the ones we recommend most to visitors:
The classic. Ride from town down to Long Sands Beach, roll through the Short Sands area, and loop back. Mostly flat, family friendly, and you'll pass some of the best lobster shacks on the coast. Give yourself 1.5–2 hours to enjoy it without rushing.
Wind through York's charming historic village, past the Old York Museum and the Old Gaol (one of the oldest public buildings in the US), down to the protected harbor. A nice mix of history and scenery. Mostly flat with one or two gentle climbs.
York's own mountain offers beginner-to-intermediate singletrack trails through the woods, plus a paved road to the summit with 360-degree views of the White Mountains and the Atlantic. About 15 minutes from the shop by bike. Plan for a half-day rental minimum.
Head south through York on quiet side roads into Kittery — Maine's oldest city and home to the famous outlet stores and the Kittery waterfront. A great full-day ride. The route passes through some beautiful salt marsh scenery along the way.
Head north from York along Route 1A (the coastal route) to Ogunquit — one of Maine's most scenic beach towns. Ogunquit's Marginal Way cliff walk is worth locking up the bike for. A great full-day adventure.
Your helmet, lock, and a local trail map are all included with your rental. We'll get you fitted properly before you head out.
Book ahead in summer. July and August are busy. Call us at 207-363-4070 to reserve your bike, especially on weekends. Walk-ins are always welcome when bikes are available, but reserving ahead guarantees your equipment.
Go early or late. Route 1 and the beach areas get busy mid-day in peak season. A 7–9AM ride along Long Sands is a completely different (and magical) experience compared to noon. The early light on the water is worth it.
Don't skip Mount Agamenticus. Most visitors never make it up there, which means the trails are surprisingly quiet. It's one of the best-kept outdoor secrets in southern Maine.
Many of our visitors spend the morning on the water and the afternoon on two wheels — or the other way around. We rent kayaks and paddleboards alongside our bikes, so you can do both from the same shop. Check our kayak and paddleboard rental page for rates and details.
Stop in at 241 York Street or give us a call — we'll get you fitted and on the road in minutes.
