York, Maine sits in a sweet spot for cyclists. You've got flat coastal paths great for beginners and casual riders, wooded rail trails connecting the Seacoast towns, and quiet country roads that roll through salt marshes and farmland. And if you're willing to drive 20–30 minutes, you're within reach of some of the best mountain biking in southern Maine.
We've been riding these trails for years, and customers ask us about them constantly. Here's where we actually go — from easy family rides to more technical outings.
Coastal & Easy Rides
Long Sands Beach Path
The classic York ride. Cruise along Route 1A past Long Sands Beach with ocean views the whole way. Flat, paved, and perfect for families or anyone on a rental bike. Best early morning before beach traffic picks up in summer.
Cape Neddick & the Nubble Loop
Ride out to Nubble Lighthouse for one of the most iconic views on the Maine coast. A few gentle hills but nothing serious. Park near Short Sands and make a loop — you'll pass lobster shacks, rocky coves, and classic Maine scenery the whole way.
York River Rail Trail Area
The York River corridor offers some pleasant flat riding along quiet roads and paths. Good for spotting herons and other wildlife, especially around the tidal flats near the marsh. A nice mellow option when you want to skip beach traffic entirely.
More Technical Riding Nearby
Mount Agamenticus — York
One of the best-kept secrets in southern Maine mountain biking — and it's literally in our backyard. Mount Agamenticus has over 40 miles of maintained singletrack ranging from smooth beginner-friendly loops to rooty, technical descents. The summit is only 691 feet but the trails punch above their weight. The conservation lands are managed by the Town of York and the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program. Download the Trailforks app before you go — the trail network is extensive and easy to get turned around in.
Eastern Trail — Multi-Town
The Eastern Trail is a long-distance multi-use trail running from South Portland down through the Seacoast towns — and a section of it passes right through York and into Kittery. It's ideal for riders who want to cover real distance on hybrid or gravel bikes. The surface varies from paved rail trail to packed gravel depending on the section. A great option for point-to-point riding if you have a shuttle.
Marginal Way — Ogunquit
Technically a walking path, but bikes are allowed outside peak summer hours (early morning is best). The Marginal Way hugs the cliffs above the ocean between Ogunquit village and Perkins Cove — the views are genuinely stunning. Short but iconic. Pair it with a loop through Ogunquit village and back down Shore Road for a scenic 5–6 mile ride.
Cutts Island Trail — Kittery
Probably the best local option for off-road riding close to York. The Kittery Land Trust maintains a nice network of trails through coastal woods and along the water. Hardtail-friendly with a mix of rooty singletrack and smooth dirt paths. Worth the short drive.
Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge — Wells
A beautiful, flat ride through coastal marshland. More of a scenic nature ride than a workout — great for e-bikes or riders who want to cruise and take in the salt marsh views. The gravel roads are well-maintained and easy on any bike.
Massabesic Lake Trails — Manchester, NH
If you want real mountain biking, this is where southern Maine and NH riders go. Massabesic has miles of well-built singletrack around a beautiful lake. Worth the hour drive on a nice weekend — bring a full-suspension or capable hardtail.
Tips for Riding in York
- Summer beach traffic is real. The stretch along Long Sands gets very busy July–August. Ride early morning or after 5pm to have the road mostly to yourself.
- Bring layers. Even in summer, morning temps along the ocean can be in the low 50s. A light jacket stuffed in a pack goes a long way.
- Tires matter on coastal roads. Salt and sand grit get into everything. Wipe down your drivetrain after riding near the beach and bring your bike in for a rinse and lube if you're riding often.
- E-bikes are great here. The Seacoast is mostly flat-to-rolling, which makes e-bikes an awesome option for covering more ground without getting worn out. We rent and sell several Trek and Electra models perfect for this kind of riding.
